چکیده

This emergy-based urban economic account provided a historical portrait of the urban economy and its structures to understand the overload of the biosphere`s assimilative capacity. The basic situation of the urban economy, involving the indigenous resources base, emergy consumption patterns, emergy exports and imports, were investigated, accounted and discussed. Using a series of ratios and indices arising from emergy analysis, including emergy intensity, environmental load ratio and environmental sustainability, this paper explained the level of economic development and environmental pressure of the Beijing economy during 1999 to 2006. Results showed that the development of economy in Beijing was closely correlated with the consumption of the nonrenewable resources and exerting rising load on environment. Of the total emergy use by the economic system, the imported nonrenewable resources from other province contribute most with increasing use from imported nonrenewable resources. Emergy intensity kept rising during the periods, with the increasing of environmental load. The pressure of environmental protect which was caused by over-heated investment in Beijing could be released after finishing the infrastructure construction. The results offer a reference towards the urban metabolic analysis driving economic policy and sustainability.

Ecological Economic Evaluation Based on Emergy as Embodied Cosmic Exergy: A Historical Study for the Beijing Urban Ecosystem 1978-2004

For ecological economic evaluation based on the unified biophysical matrix this research illustrates an updated emergy synthesis in terms of embodied cosmic exergy instead of embodied solar energy, which successes the foundation of systems ecological theory but changes the starting point for the estimation from simply the sun to the cosmos. According to the modified definition implicating expli...

Emergy Assessment for Urban Sustainable Development

This paper is a study of the use of emergy indices for the evaluation of sustainable urban development. The Emergy Exchange Ratio (EER) and Emergy Waste Index (EWI) were introduced into the Emergy Sustainability Index (ESI) to establish a new index that reflects the emergy benefit per unit cost of environmental impact, which includes the market exchange and pollution/waste flow in the measureme...

Limiting Factor Analysis of Urban Ecosystems based on Emergy—A Case Study of three cities in the Pearl River Delta in China

The development of urban ecosystems is usually restricted by a few key limiting factors, including both the natural resource condition and the socioeconomic performance. To link the natural, economic and social subsystems together and uniformly measure the multiple ecological flows within and amongst these subsystems, emergy analysis was applied in this paper to describe the status quo of urban...

Analysis of Resource and Emission Impacts: An Emergy-Based Multiple Spatial Scale Framework for Urban Ecological and Economic Evaluation

The development of the complex and multi-dimensional urban socio-economic system creates impacts on natural capital and human capital, which range from a local to a global scale. An emergy-based multiple spatial scale analysis framework and a rigorous accounting method that can quantify the values of human-made and natural capital losses were proposed in this study. With the intent of comparing...

Emergy-based Environmental Impact Assessment in Urban Metabolic Process: A Case Study of Beijing, 1999-2006

The urban metabolic process causes impacts on natural capital and human capital, which range from local to global scale. In this study, an emergy-based environmental impact assessment model is designed for the urban metabolic system of Beijing from 1999 to 2006. The model focuses on two main typologies of processes, i.e., production and consumption. The direct and indirect emergy demand was ass...
